This week we resume Used Car Face-Off with three American coupes from the company that started it all: Ford Motor Company. However, each two door here has a very different character that appeals to a different type of personality. Which one is your favorite?

The first contestant: 1997 Ford Mustang GT - $2500

Here we have a relatively clean California Mustang with a V8, manual transmission, and a whopping 211K miles...does the driver oriented powertrain attract you or does the high mileage drive you away from this RWD muscle car?

The Ford Probe was a car designed to replace the Mustang in the 1990s but its odd name and FWD layout made it too European to become the muscle car that the Mustang is...however, this one looks relatively clean and has 177K miles on its manual transmission; does that make it worth the price?

The asking price for this 20 year old Thunderbird may seem a bit high, but with a reported 7K miles on it as a grandmother’s car it may just be worth it. Likely a V6, this was one of the last American personal luxury coupes ever sold. Does that make it appeal to you?

Those Probe GTs were really fun cars, that one looks in great shape. I’d take it over the Stang and definetly over the T-bird, those T-birds were terrible.

Funny how the car with likely the least horsepower here wins in terms of driving dynamics...I guess a slow car fast is better than a fast car slow?

At least it’s a Ford, but it doesn’t look very nineties...

The SOHC Mod Motor was a real dog the 1st couple of years in the GT. It got better but 1997 was not a good year.

I’ll take the Mustang. I’m not interested in FWD and the T-Bird has too few miles, it’s a ticking time bomb.

Not a huge fan of the SN95 Mustangs so that’s out.

The Bird isn’t a Super Coupe and has a Salvage Title so that’s out.

Guess it’s the Mazda MX6 Ford Probe that wins this round!

It’s actually a decently quick car.

AU Falcon was released 1998.

YES! A prettier and better equipped Thunderbird, in essence. Although facelift models are positively hideous IMO...

Yes, but was there ever a true two door variant?

I didn’t even notice that...I wonder why such a low mile and supposedly babied car has a salvage title...

Yeah, all the rubber bits will probably be horribly deteriorated after all these years sitting...

Some areas really hammer the owner and/or the buyer if the car goes unregestered for a long period. Iowa made me pay 3 months of registration on a “cheap” flip once because the PO let the tags expire. Somehow the salvage title fixed it for this guy but that makes it way less desirable too.

technically no , this was done by a company not associated in any way to Ford Australia.

but also technically yes , as Ford did make a ute variant. (2 doors)

I’ll take the Mustang. The condition of the Thunderbird scares me and the so called ‘euro’ Probe looks like an American/Japanese mix in the worst of both worlds kind of way.

Certainly, and worse is it’s probably only had one or two oil changes in the last 18 years.

Put the mustang and the Probe on a track and I think of would be interesting.
